What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare service that restores movement and function following injuries or surgery. A physiotherapist deeply understands the body and uses hands-on techniques and tailored exercises to help patients recover. They work with individuals of all ages to treat various injuries, helping you return to your daily activities.

What does a physiotherapist do?

Physiotherapists are university-trained healthcare professionals who specialise in diagnosing, treating, rehabilitating, and preventing injuries related to sports, work, or daily activities. They offer hands-on treatments when needed and provide customised exercises, stretches, and balance training to aid recovery and prevent future injuries.

  • Post-operative care: Knee and hip replacements, ACL reconstruction, shoulder rotator cuff repairs, and ankle surgeries.

  • Post-fracture rehabilitation: Wrist, ankle, and radial head fractures.

You can easily book an appointment online or call us at 09 362 0552 for any urgent inquiries. Alternatively, you can send us a message through our contact page or email us at enquiries@leatonperformance.co.nz.

What are your physio fees?

Your physiotherapy session costs depend on whether you have ACC or insurance coverage. We offer affordable surcharges with ACC. For specific details, feel free to call us at 09 362 0552.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a physio?

No, you can visit a physiotherapist without a doctor’s referral. However, some health insurance providers may require a referral for fee coverage, so it's best to check with your insurer.

Can physiotherapists prescribe pain relief or medical certificates?

Physiotherapists cannot prescribe medication or issue medical certificates for work. You’ll need to see your doctor, but your physiotherapist can refer you if necessary.

Is my injury covered under ACC?

ACC covers part of your physiotherapy treatment, and we charge a small surcharge for your claim. Our physiotherapists can lodge an ACC claim for you when you visit after an accident.

Can I use an existing ACC claim from another provider?

Yes, as long as your ACC claim is still valid, we can continue treating you under that claim.

Does private insurance cover physiotherapy?

Insurance providers like Southern Cross and NIB often cover physiotherapy if your plan includes medical coverage. We also offer Easy Claim services and can help you check your coverage on the day of your visit.

What should I expect at my first physiotherapy appointment?

Your first appointment will last 60 minutes. During this time, your physiotherapist will assess your injury and create a treatment plan, including hands-on therapy, exercises, and injury education. They can also refer you for further scans, such as X-rays or ultrasounds if needed.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any relevant medical information, such as doctor’s referrals, hospital discharge papers, medication lists, and reports from X-rays or MRIs. You may also want to bring comfortable clothing for the session, like shorts and a T-shirt.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy sessions?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes or sportswear. You’re welcome to bring a change of clothes if needed. If you’re receiving treatment for your upper back, we recommend wearing a regular bra instead of a sports bra to allow easier access to the treatment area.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the individual case, the severity of the condition, and the treatment plan. For some injuries, a few sessions may be enough, while chronic conditions may require ongoing management.
